Year 3 Information

Welcome to Year 3 with Mrs Crow and Mrs Tarrier

In Year 3 we will be learning about lots of exciting topics throughout the year such as The Stone Age, Volcanoes, The Romans and many more!

If you missed it, here is our 'Welcome to Year 3' meeting

Home Learning

Spellings will be sent the first week of a new half term sharing each week's spelling lists. There will also be ideas for home learning activities to support your child with learning these spellings. There will be a weekly spelling quiz on a Friday morning. Home learning may also consist of children accessing Education City, Times Tables Rockstars and reading of their school book.

Reading

Home reading is invaluable to ensure that your child meets the expected standard or above. We recommend that your child reads a minimum of 3 times a week and either you or your child can write in the reading record book. If they read any books or magazines that are not on the school scheme, we ask that these are also recorded in their reading records. Our aim is to move as many children as possible off our scheme books. If your child moves onto own choice books they will be able to choose one from the class library. As an incentive, once your child has read 10 books, they will receive a certificate.

Year 4 Multiplication Test

In Year 3, we revise the Key Stage 1 times tables (2x, 5x and 10x) and once secure, we move onto learning the following times tables: 4x, 8x and 3x.

In the Summer term of Year 4 there will be a statutory times tables assessment set by the Government. Therefore, learning the multiplication tables is an important part of Year 3 and Year 4 home learning.  We welcome your support in learning these as over learning is exceptionally important. It is required that Year 4 children have a quick recall of their times tables facts to 12x12. All Year 4 pupils will take part in a government assessment. This is taken online, where children answer 25 questions with 6 seconds to answer them.
Swimming

Swimming will be in the Spring term. The lessons will be held at Wolgarston, assessed and employed by Wolgarston staff. For the lessons, girls will need a hat and a costume and boys require swimming trunks (not baggy short style). Goggles can be worn but only with a letter of parental consent. Further letters to follow.

Snacks and Water

We encourage water bottles to be brought into school every day filled with water only.
Snacks should consist of either fruit or cheese.

PE

Children will need an outdoor and indoor PE kit to keep in their lockers for their PE lessons.
As PE is part of the school curriculum, they will need the correct kit:
Outdoor PE kit: Plain black tracksuit jacket/sweatshirt and black jogging bottoms with a white t shirt and trainers.
Indoor PE kit: White t shirt and plain black shorts.

Year 3's PE days will be Wednesdays and Thursdays for this half term. Pupils with long hair will need a hairband to tie it back and earrings must be able to be removed by the pupil.

Spellings

We have 4 weekly Spelling lessons in Year 3 where children practise their spelling rules and common exception words. In order for children to be at the Expected standard for their ages, they will need to be able to read and spell all of these words correctly. The Years 3 and 4 words are split between the 2 classes so that by the end of Year 4 they will know all of these words.
