History
Vision Statement
At St Michael’s, we believe that high-quality history lessons inspire children to want to know more about the past, how it has shaped our future and to think and act as historians.
Enrichment Days
Over the course of the year, children have the opportunity to take part in enrichment days to enhance the learning over the course of a unit.
Portals from the Past visit Year 3 to kick start their Stone Age unit. They get the change to dress like a Stone Age person for the day and experience all of the developments in Britain during this time.
Mr Mckenzie leads a World War Two workshop for Year 4 where the children take part in an interactive session learning about the Blackout, Blitz, Wardens, Gas Masks and Bomb Handling. Mr Mckenzie also shared his own family history about the war from the German perspective.
Trips
Children across the school, have the opportunity to take part in trips to enhance their History units of work.
Year 1 visit the Toy Museum in Cannock, here they get to get hands on learning about toys over time, and make comparisons talking about the similarities and differences between them.
Year 2 visit our local area, with their history hats on to learn about how our local area has changed over time. They visit the old gaol which is right next to our school and get to see how our Victorian school used to be inked with this. They visit St Michael's church to see the Littleton family tombs. Edward Littleton was a significant figure in our local area and even helped built part of our school in 1889.
Year 3 visit Wroxeter when they are learning about the Romans. The children get to explore an ancient Roman city whilst being lead around by an expert, learning all about life in Roman Britain.
Embedding our Historical Knowledge
At St Michael's, each year group learn a song which outlines the core learning for each topic of their historical study.
These songs enable our children to embed the key learning as they progress through their history learning journey with us.
