Welcome to Year 4 with
Miss Challinor and Mrs Sharman
The year always goes very fast and alongside the learning the children will receive transition to their next school. We will therefore develop the independence skills they started to develop in Year 3. Our first topic entitled ‘Are we future inventors?’ has already got underway. We will be studying the Stone age and Electricity. As well as myself, working in year 4 this year will be Mrs Sharman and also Mrs Crowe who will cover my management time.
Homework will be given out on Friday and the children are required to hand in by the following Wednesday in the home learning tray at the back of the class. Home learning will usually consist of spelling, multiplication tables, reading and Maths/ English or topic. The children will receive learning to build on skills taught in class. As with the other classes if your child has been unable to do the home learning at home we will be able to provide them with time at lunch or break to complete it.
Home reading is a vital part in enabling your child to make expected or above progress in reading. Along with the reading in school it can develop fluency, recall and inference. We advise that your child reads a minimum of 3 times a week. We then ask that you or even the children themselves sign to say what they have read. We have a reading challenge in year 4, if your child completes the reading challenge bookmark then they receive a merit. We also ask that if your child reads home books, library books or magazines that they are also recorded in the reading diary.
The maths curriculum requires all year 4 children to learn all tables to 12x12 and be able to have quick recall of them. There will be regular tables learning in class, with the children completing a tables passport and the children will also be asked to learn them as homework. The children will work at their own pace and will progress onto the next when they have successfully recalled it in an independent activity.
We do not have set groups in year 4 for each learning challenge taught children will be put on the objective that suits them. To know where to place them all the schools detailed assessments will be used. If a child is ready to extend their learning their objective will be changed immediately, this could even be mid lesson.
Please have PE kit in school daily. In the spring term there will be swimming lessons again, the date will be given to you at a nearer date.
As the year progresses there will be transition opportunities linked to the middle school including visits and work in school. When we know any details, we will let you know nearer the time.
