Welcome to Year 2 with
Mr Cooper and Mrs Tarrier
YEAR 2 Parents information sheet
In Year 2 we will learn about a variety of exciting topics, beginning with ‘If you could travel anywhere where would you go, how would you travel and what would you do there?’ exploring the world’s five continents.
PE will take place on a Monday and Friday.
Pupils with long hair will need a hairband to tie it back. Earrings must be able to be removed by the pupil. During the colder months pupils will need a black tracksuit, joggers and sweatshirt or hoodie, and trainers so PE can take place outside.
Home Learning will be given out on Fridays to be returned to the Home Learning tray by the following Wednesday, the children can put it in earlier if completed. The children will be responsible for handing in their own homework. If homework is not completed pupils will spend break time completing it as it is an important part of their learning. Home Learning should be completed in pencil unless stated otherwise.
Diaries should show the children have read at home a minimum of 3 times a week. Remember if they read books/ magazines other than their school book write it in the diary as this is evidence of their reading. In school pupils will read individually with support staff and volunteers. Books will be changed on either a Tuesday or Thursday and it is the pupils’ responsibility to put the book in the book change pile if it has been completed.
I will hear the pupils read at least once a week during guided reading sessions.
If pupils know their times tables to 10x10 it helps a lot in Maths. The order for learning tables is x10 x5 x2 x4 x8 x3 x6 x9 x7. When they learn it is best not just to count in steps but to know the question and the answer. Techniques for learning include: How many times you can write them in 2 minutes, matching games, bubble writing them, writing them in different colours, making board games etc.
In Year 2 we will be focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
COMMON EXCEPTION WORDS
Included in your pack is a list of Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words. Pupils should know how to spell all of the Year 1 words. If they don’t support at home to practice these would be fantastic, we will continue to practice these in school also. By the end of Year 2 we expect pupils to have learnt all of the words on your hand out.
BUMPED HEAD NOTES
If pupils are given a bumped head note during the school day the note will be passed onto the office and a call will be made to parents if we have any immediate concerns. Pupils will also still be sent home with their bumped head note.
END OF THE DAY ROUTINE
When picking up pupils at the end of the day we ask all parents and guardians to wait away from the classroom door, on the top playground, so pupils can be dismissed safely. The school day ends at 3:15 in Year 2.
