Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 with

Class teacher Mrs Probert and teaching assistants Mrs Herrington and Mrs Fisher

Dear Parents and Carers,

A warm welcome to Year 1. I hope you all had a wonderful summer and that your children are ready for new learning experiences this year. I am really looking forward to teaching your children and working in partnership with you. In Year 1 Mrs Herrington is the teaching assistant and she will work with us in a morning. The children will have different topics this year and our first theme is called Whatever the Weather. I have attached an overview for the work we will be covering during this theme. At the start of every theme an overview will be emailed home.

PE kit

The children will be taking part in Outdoor Games, Gymnastics and Dance throughout the year. PE is on a Tuesday and a Wednesday. As part of their PE kit the children will need trainers, no pumps please. Please can you ensure that all of your child’s PE kit is clearly labelled and as the weather gets colder the children can wear a tracksuit during the lesson as we will still have PE outside. Your child’s PE kit will be stored in school and sent home at the end of every half term to be washed. If your child has their ears pierced, please ensure that earrings are not worn on PE days.

Reading Books

Your child has been allocated a reading day. They will be given the opportunity to read with an adult at school on that day. However, there may be additional opportunities throughout the week for your child to read their book at school so it is important that reading books are brought to school on a daily basis. Your child will be able to change their reading book on a Wednesday or Friday if it has been completed at home and the reading diary has been signed by an adult.

I have attached a list of Year 1 high frequency words. By the end of Year 1 your child should be able to read and spell all of these words.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Homework may be English, Maths, Science or Topic/project based. There may be times when I will signpost a website which your child may use as part of their homework that week. Inside the front cover of your child’s home learning log will be their log in details for education city which is a website that we use at school to support learning. Please feel free to play the different games available to practise a range of skills.

Spellings

This year the children will focus on a particular phonic sound or spelling rule each week. When homework is sent home, I will inform you of the phonic sound we have been learning and provide examples of words we have been practising. It would be helpful if you could talk to your child about the example words and think of other words which contain the same phonic sound. The children will not be given a list of spellings to learn.

Phonics

The phonic sound mats attached show you all the sounds your child should recognise by the end of Year 1. At the start of Year 1 we will revisit all the sounds covered in Reception and move onto Phase 5. Please practise these sounds at home.

Things to remember

Please ensure that all your child’s PE kit and school uniform is labelled clearly including coats.

Water bottles should be brought to school daily. We have drinking water in the classroom so water bottles can be refilled when needed.

Please remember to inform Year 1 staff or the school office if a different adult is collecting your child from school.

Thank you for your help and co-operation.
