Welcome to Year 1 with
Mrs Probert and Mrs Axcell
Dear Parents and Carers,
A warm welcome to Year 1. I hope you all had a wonderful summer and that your children are ready for new learning experiences this year. I am really looking forward to teaching your children and working in partnership with you.
In Year 1 Mrs Axcell is the teaching assistant and she will work with us every morning. The children will have five topic themes this year and our first theme is called Whatever the Weather. I have attached an overview for the work we will be covering during this theme. Theme-1-Topic-Web-for-parents At the start of every theme an overview will be emailed home.
Please click the link for our Autumn topic Autumn-2-Topic-Web.
The children will be taking part in Outdoor Games, Gymnastics and Dance throughout the year. PE is on a Monday morning and a Tuesday afternoon. As part of their PE kit the children will need trainers, no pumps please. Please can you ensure that all of your child’s PE kit is clearly labelled and as the weather gets colder the children can wear a tracksuit during the lesson as we will still have PE outside. Your child’s PE kit will be stored in school and sent home at the end of every half term to be washed. If your child has their ears pierced please ensure that earrings are not worn on PE days.
Your child has been allocated a reading day. They will be given the opportunity to read with an adult at school on that day. However, there may be additional opportunities throughout the week for your child to read their book at school so it is important that reading books are brought to school on a daily basis. Your child will be able to change their reading book on a Wednesday or Friday if it has been completed at home and the reading diary has been signed by an adult.
Homework will be sent home on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Homework may be English, Maths, Science or Topic/project based. There may be times when I will signpost a website which your child may use as part of their homework that week. Inside the front cover of your child’s home learning log will be their log in to education city which is a website that we use at school to support learning. Please feel free to play the different games available to practise a range of skills.
This year the children will focus on a particular phonic sound or spelling rule each week. When homework is sent home I will inform you of the phonic sound we have been learning and provide examples of words we have been practising. It would be helpful if you could talk to your child about the example words and think of other words which contain the same phonic sound. The children will not be given a list of spellings to learn.
Year 1 Information Home Communication Books
Please keep the home communication books with your child’s reading wallet. Any messages you need to inform staff about should be written in the book. In Year 1 we encourage the children to hand their book to a member of staff. I will ask the children daily if anyone needs to show me their book. It will help them to remember to do this if you tell them there is a message in the book before they come to school.
Things to Remember
Please ensure that all of your child’s PE kit and school uniform is labelled clearly including coats. Water bottles should be brought to school on a daily basis. We have drinking water in the classroom so water bottles can be refilled when needed. Please remember to write a message in the home communication book or to inform the school office if a different adult is collecting your child from school.
Thank you for your help and co-operation.
