School Games Mark Award 2016/17
We are delighted to announce that we, St. Michaels First School, Penkridge have achieved the School Games Mark Award for the 2016/17 academic year. This is the third consecutive year that we have achieved this award.
The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
Our sporting achievements this year include: inter-school competitions in Tag Rugby, Tri-Golf, Cross Country, Cricket and Hockey. We were delighted once again to qualify for the level 3 County Finals in Hockey.
We have been extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including our year 4 sports leaders who have organised and run lunchtime activities.
As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.
A special thanks goes to our PE Co-ordinator, Gaynor Sharman, for her hard work and endless enthusiasm!
We look forward to applying once again in 2018!
Cricket Festival Penkridge 2017
Our cricketers gave 110% at the recent Penkridge Festival. Convincing wins over Marshbrook and St. Leonards schools put us in a strong position for the final match against Princefield. Unfortunately, in a very close match, we eventually lost by 9 runs. Well done to our team for their perseverance and determination!
Tag Rugby Tournament 2017
Well done to the Tag Rugby Squad who performed so well at the South Staffs School Games Tournament recently. There was stiff opposition from other local schools but still we dodged, charged and reacted with agility and determination. Well done to the children from year 4, we came fifth overall.
Year 3 and Year 4 Tennis
Well done to all those who took part in the recent tournament at Cannock Leisure Centre. Organised efficiently as ever by, school games organiser, Chris Woods the competition ran smoothly from start to a thrilling end. All sixteen teams received excellent coaching from Tom Hole from the Albany Club, Wolverhampton in preparation for the group matches. The year four team won their group games convincingly and progressed through to the tight fought deciders, coming fourth overall. The year three team were determined and showed great promise for next year. Well done!
Golf tournament 2017
After trying out this new sport at last year’s competition, golf has made an exciting addition to the year3/4 curriculum. As a result we were able to provide two excited teams for this year’s tournament at Cheslyn Hay High School as part of the South Staffs School Games. All twenty children, wearing the new sports kit, tried out various challenges using chipping and putting skills. The results didn’t go our way but we learnt lots.
Year 1 Dance Festival
This year’s theme for the Wolgarston’s First School Dance Festival was Musicals. Year 1 had chosen a mix from the show, Billy Elliot, the boy who loved to dance!
All the children had created the dance as part of their curriculum PE. They enjoyed developing themes of flying and electricity as well as learning to hand jive. Marc Bolan’s music “I love to Boogie” proved to be a big hit with the children! Well done year 1 for their passion and independence.
Well done to our Cross Country teams who competed at the South Staffs Finals event at Brewood Middle School. Every member of the year 3 and year 4 teams performed to their best.
The year 3 girls came 5th overall, year 3 boys 7th, year 4 boys 8th and the year 4 girls also 8th. There were several children who achieved improved placings and personal bests. Thanks to Mrs Grundy and her team who have worked so hard at Running Club these last few weeks.
